Chain honors veterans' service
May 27, 2008 - Daily Journal
TUPELO - For the sixth year the restaurant chain that includes Harveys, Sweet Peppers Deli and Fairpark Grill honored armed services personnel, veterans, police officers and firefighters in uniform with a free entree at their restaurants on Memorial Day.
The Eat With Us Group, based in Columbus, served about 1,200 individuals with free entrees on Memorial Day in 2007.
"We really appreciate what they're doing," said Capt. Jason Thomas of Tupelo Fire Department's Station No. 5. Thomas, Sgt. Mark Potter and Sgt. Wade Hopkins had lunch at Harvey's Monday.
The event was honored in 2005 with the Mississippi's Restaurant Neighbor Award from the National Restaurant Association. The award recognizes member restaurants that demonstrate a dedication to community outreach.
"I think it's an important event because these servicemen and women put their lives on the line for us every day," said Harveys manager Kowana Wilson. "They don't always get the recognition they deserve."
Even if not in uniform, veterans are encouraged to bring their jackets, insignia or medals to show the younger people, said CEO John Bean.
"Our staff enjoys meeting these heroes and honoring them each year," Bean said.
National Guardsmen from a Holly Springs detachment took advantage of the event to come to Tupelo with their families.
"We usually only see each other once a month, but decided to meet here for this," said Sgt. James Hamblin. He was joined by Sgt. Jeremy Sapp and Specialist John W. Smith.
"This is a great thing they're doing," Smith said.
